A maroon 2006 GMC Yukon driven by a 46-year-old man crashed into a utility pole just before 9 a.m. on Thursday, downing the pole and causing a road closure on Lamar Avenue for several hours.
The accident happened in the 2700 block of Lamar Avenue in front of Papa Murphy’s Pizza, near the intersection of Lamar and Collegiate.
The driver, who was traveling eastbound on Lamar Avenue, lost control of the vehicle and struck the pole, police department spokesman Curtis Garrett said.
“Utility wires had been pulled from the poles and were lying on the ground on Northeast 27th Street all the way to East Price Street,” Garrett said. “There were no injuries to the two occupants of the vehicle. The driver stated that he had worked all night and apparently fell asleep, veered to the right and struck the pole.”
Police and utility technicians closed the westbound side of Lamar at the intersection, detouring traffic to side roads around the scene of the accident in order to make repairs to the downed utility pole.
