On Saturday afternoon around 3 p.m. an accident involving a funeral procession resulted in one fatality and injuries to a motorcycle escort and the drivers of the hearse and lead car.
The driver that hit the procession died after crashing into the lead car and then into the hearse, which then hit the motorcycle escort.
The escort, who was thrown from his bike, had not made it around to the front of the procession at the time of the crash or he may have sustained worse injuries. He was transported to the hospital for treatment.
The funeral was for Rev. James Sparks, conducted by Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home.
The accident happened approximately four miles west of the community of Chicota as the procession was going to the cemetery.
According to Fry-Gibbs personnel, the hearse driver and lead car driver were also taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries but are ‘okay’.
