North Lamar among State Special Olympics Bowling Winners
Nine North Lamar High School students participated in the State Special Olympics Bowling competition in Austin on February 1-2. With close to 2000 bowlers from across the state of Texas ranging from the ages of 14-99, all of North Lamar’s competitors placed within the top six spots in their respective categories. The large event requires three bowling alleys with team members often bowling at different places.
Three of the North Lamar athletes were rookies and contributed to the six who placed this year and competed in previous years. Individual team members pictured beginning front left are Jamie Hofer (2nd place), Susan Stewart (4th place), and Joseph Klaber (6th place). Standing in the second row are Amber Morris (4th place), Coach Irene Leija, Adam Blackmon (3rd place), and Gabriel Smith (5th place). In back are Coach Jackie Moseley, Michael Thomas (6th place), Joshua Johnson (5th place), and Coach Paula Liles. Not shown are Joshua Clark (3rd place) and Coach Sherry Kuhl.
Special Olympics bowlers who compete at state are placed in age groups from 14-16, 17-21, 22-29, and 30-99. Each age group is placed according to bowling averages sent in from the area tournament and genders compete against the same gender. Individuals and mixed teams participants may use ramps or wheelchairs for assistance.
