The 13th annual Braille Challenge® is the only national reading and writing contest in Braille for blind and visually impaired students.
Braille Challenge® categories include reading comprehension, Braille speed and accuracy, proofreading, spelling and reading tactile charts and graphs.
The preliminary round is open to students of all skills levels. Agencies and schools throughout the U.S. and Canada have partnered with Braille Institute to host 42 Regional Braille Challenge contests from mid-January through mid-March. The top-scoring 60 contestants come to Los Angeles in June for a Final Round—two days of competition, camaraderie and fun.
Darbie Thompson, 4th grader at North Lamar’s Bailey Intermediate School, competed on February 9, 2013 in Austin, Texas at her grade level which included both 4th and 5th graders. Darbie placed 3rd in the state at this level. She won’t know if she has qualified for Nationals in California until after all 42 Regions have held their Braille Challenges and can organize and rank all the scores.
