Visual Arts award winners honored at Paris Junior College

Winners of the First Juried Student Art Exhibit received their awards Tuesday at the exhibition opening of their entries in the Foyer Gallery at Paris Junior College.

First place winners at the inaugural Juried Student Art Exhibit at Paris Junior College included (from left): Jay Zachgo of Sulphur Springs, Drawing; Barillon Dougherty of Paris, Two Dimensional Design and Digital Photography; Candra Wyatt of Paris, Painting; PJC art instructor Susan Moore; Mario Munguia of Paris, Photography; and Ciara O’Rourke of Paris, Three Dimensional Design.

“The accomplished young students who represented the award winners for this first juried student exhibit unanimously reflect the combination of craftsmanship and mastery of their mediums that will serve them well as they continue with their educations,” said PJC art instructor Susan Moore. “At least half of the winners will be graduating from PJC in May and moving on to four-year colleges where they will continue their art educations in myriad directions, including communication design, photography, education, and museum curatorship, among others.  PJC is very fortunate to have had a hand in launching these artistic careers.”

Winners by category include:

Painting: First, Candra Wyatt of Paris for “Still Life” in Painting; Second, “Happy Farm, Happy Farmer, Happy Life,” James Carey of Reno; Third, “Modern Vanitas,” Jay Zachgo of Sulphur Springs.

Drawing: First, Jay Zachgo of Sulphur Springs for “Immortalized;” Second, Ciarra O’Rourke of Paris for “Woman’s Back;” Third: Candra Wyatt of Paris for “Gesture 10 Minute Drawing;” Honorable Mention, Jessica Guajardo of Sulphur Bluff for “Bones.”

Two Dimensional Design & Digital Photography: First, Barillon Dougherty of Paris for “Sligo Abbey;” Second, James Carey of Reno for “Unplugged from Morality;” Third, Jennifer Eschmeyer of Paris for “Despair.”

Three Dimensional Design: First, Ciara O’Rourke of Paris for “The Catch;” Rebecca Arroyo of Powderly for “Running Ostriches;” Third, Jennifer Eschmeyer of Paris for “Coco the Cockatiel;” Honorable Mention, Frank Ray of Paris for “Painted by Light.”

Photography: First, Mario Munguia of Paris for “Lighting Up the Night;” Michael Russell of Powderly for “Prescribed Burn;” Third, Jessica Guajardo of Sulphur Bluff for “Untitled (library);” Honorable Mention, Carolyn Fields of Paris for “Portrait;” Honorable Mention, Lance Wyche of Paris for “Cimmie in Flight;” Honorable Mention, Cecelia Case of Paris for “Grass.”

The student artwork will remain on exhibit at the Foyer Gallery until May 2.
