On Friday, December 21, Lamar County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a residence in the north eastern part of Lamar County in reference to a gunshot victim, according to Chief Deputy Scott Cass.
The victim — a 71-year-old male — was attempting to shoot a coyote in the pasture behind his home with a shotgun.
According to Chief Deputy Cass, while the man was walking through a gate on the property, he slipped and fell and tried to use the shotgun to assist him in regaining his balance. The shotgun discharged and struck him on the lower left chest, exiting the left back.
The man was transported to a Dallas Hospital via helicopter, but was alert and in stable condition when transported.
