Police Department Car_slider“Paris Police are still investigating this shooting that was reported at about 7:18 p.m. on Sunday,” Paris Police department spokesman Curtis Garrett said.

A care-flight helicopter — which had to land in the parking lot on the other side of Clarksville Street — flew Jajuan Rosheen Minter to a Dallas-area hospital to evaluate and treat his injuries.

According to a resident at Spanish Oaks, the man was shot on the eastern side of the apartment complex.

Alert and conscious, the victim advised officers that he did not know who had shot him, Garrett said.

Officers found that the victim had received multiple gunshot wounds, but after receiving treatment he was released.

With little details from the victim about the shooter, Paris police continue to investigate this shooting and encourage anyone that has any information regarding this case to call the Paris police department at 903.784.6688.

Bringing an extraordinary insight into how life has left its mark on each of the characters, the first two presentations, held on Sept. 16 and 17, brought success and the theatre department extends invitations the public to attend the last two shows.

“Winner of the 1982 American Theatre Critics Association Award, Best Regional Play, Talking With… presents characters who share with us the way in which life has touched each of them,” Paris ISD spokesman Jeanne Kraft said.

“These extraordinary monologues received a standing ovation at Louisville’s Actors Theatre where they were first presented,” she said. “These characters amuse, move and frighten, always speaking from the depths of their souls.”

The characters of Talking With… include:

  • a young happy wife who escapes to Oz
  • a fundamentalist snake handler
  • an actress who will stop at nothing to get a job
  • a baton twirler
  • and others

“The cast includes the talents of Shelby Wilson, Caroline James, Molly Jackson, Maggie Maxwell, Kala Vickers, Erin Wright, Ana Luna, D.J. Samuels, and Alex Montellano,” Kraft said.

The theatre department is located in the Fine Arts wing off Collegiate Drive on Dylan Ballard Drive — across from the tennis courts. Curtain time is at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students.

For more information, contact the PHS theatre department at 903.737.7400 ext. 2531.

Michelle Obama sparks “Drink More Water” campaign

$
0
0

First Lady Michelle Obama recently launched a campaign to encourage people to drink more water. She said that drinking water was the single best thing we could do to improve our health. She also stated that “water is the best energy drink.”

Dr. Chris Prakash, eParisExtra columnist

Dr. Chris Prakash, eParisExtra contributor

Is it true? Are her recommendations based on facts?

Forty-three percent of Americans drink less than four cups of water daily, and 25 percent of children do not drink any water daily (federal statistics).

Drinking more water makes intuitive sense. We all know the 8 by 8 rule – drink 8 glasses (8 oz) of water a day. But is this based on hard data? Let’s examine.

There are no good scientific studies to support this recommendation; however, there are a number of observational trials that support the notion that water is an essential ingredient for our health.

Let us look at the guidelines set by the Institute of Medicine: Total water intake should be 91 ounces for women and 125 ounces for men (from all food and beverages combined). Usually, about 25 percent of water comes from our food. Also note that all fluids count, even caffeinated beverages. So, an average female needs to consume approximately 70 ounces of fluids, and an average male requires about 90 ounces of fluids every day. Of course, these figures are approximate, and fluid requirement can be highly individualized.

Most of us get enough water in the foods and liquids that we consume on a daily basis. Our kidneys have a sophisticated filtration mechanism regulated by hormones (mainly ADH) that regulates fluid (and electrolyte) balance. Most healthy people can let thirst be a guide of water intake. Also look at the color of your urine – if dark and concentrated, you might need to increase your water intake.

Can we drink too much water?

Although uncommon, it is possible to drink too much water. This could be the case if you have congestive heart failure or an underlying condition involving the kidneys or liver, predisposing you to fluid overload. It is advisable to check with your doctor regarding this. Rarely, drinking too much water can cause hyponatremia/low sodium in blood (some patients with disease of the adrenal glands, or endurance athletes, such as marathon runners, who drink large amounts of water). In general, though, drinking too much water rarely causes any problems in healthy adults.

Switch out Soda for Water!

According to the Harvard School of Public Health: Two out of three adults and one out of three children in the United States are overweight or obese, and the nation spends an estimated $190 billion each year treating obesity-related health conditions. Rising consumption of sugary drinks has been a major contributor to the obesity epidemic. A typical 20-ounce soda contains 15 to 18 teaspoons of sugar and upwards of 240 calories. A 64-ounce fountain cola drink could have up to 700 calories. People who drink this “liquid candy” do not feel as full as if they had eaten the same calories from solid food and do not compensate by eating less.

Even though the First Lady’s campaign may not be based on scientific data, drinking more water is healthier for most people, especially if they switch out soda consumption with water. Tap water vs. bottled water is a whole different debate, and I will leave that for some other time.

This year, the all-day event will be even better than last, although the first annual Rides for a Reason brought the organization much success and awareness.

“The event will include a hamburger cook-off, 5K run, antique car show, a softball tournament, bounce houses for children and a memorial motorcycle ride,” Dylan’s father, Ronnie Ballard said.

The full schedule of events for this year’s Rides for a Reason include:

  • 8 a.m.: Running for a Reason: 5K fun run/walk and Rounding Bases for a Reason: softball tournament (may start Friday depending on number of teams entered)
  • 10 a.m.: Rumble for a Reason: collector/classic car show and a silent auction
  • 11 a.m.: Ride for a Reason: memorial motorcycle ride
  • 12 p.m.: Cooking for a Reason: hamburger cook-off and tailgate party

There will also be beer goggles golf cart obstacle courses, face painting, bounce houses and many more activities going on throughout the day, according to event organizers.

The non-profit organization was created to honor Dylan Ballard, the son of Paris locals Ronnie and Vickie Ballard. In a tragic accident in 2011, their young son was killed in an alcohol related car accident.

The memorial bike ride for Dylan is said to be amongst the most moving moments of the event.

Father and Co-founder Ronnie Ballard said that the message is to keep the roads of Lamar County safe. If you need a ride, call us and we will pick you up, he said.

However, it is not Dylan’s Drivers mission to take individuals ‘bar-hopping’, or to a party or to get food.

The mission is simple: get people home safely or to another specified safe place.

Dylan’s Drivers has approximately 250 volunteers, Ballard said.

The organization has benefited almost 2,500 people by giving them safe rides home in just the short two years that they have been established; however, they need continual support and by coming out and enjoying the fun annual event and festivities of Rides for a Reason, you could do just that.

Dylan’s Drivers has approximately 250 volunteers, Ballard said.

Police Department Fire Car_SliderIn a case with few witnesses, the victim is giving officers few leads to go on to complete the investigation and find the shooter.

“The investigation is certainly ongoing,” Garrett said.  ”But the victim has still refused to give any information to police pertaining to the shooter.”

The shooting was reported to police at 7:18 p.m. Sunday at the Spanish Oaks Apartment Complex on Clarksville Street, according to police records.

The victim was shot on the eastern side of the complex, but no witness to the shooting has come forth.

Police identified the victim as 29-year-old Jajuan Rosheen Minter, who was transported by helicopter to a Dallas-area hospital. He was later transferred to another hospital for more advanced treatment.

As police investigate this case, the department encourages any leads or information pertaining to the shooting to be called into the police department at 903.784.6688.
