Reception to meet new Paris ISD Superintendent

PISD_SignThe Paris ISD Board of Trustees will have a called meeting Monday, March 18, to officially appoint Paul Jones as the new Superintendent of the Paris ISD school district.

There will be reception following at Paris High School at 5:30p.m.

This is open to the public and everyone is welcome to attend.

The Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots Program recently recognized North Lamar sophomore, Miriah Burton, for her outstanding contribution to the Lamar County Toys for Tots program by presenting her with a Special Commander’s Award.

During the holiday season, Burton collected 150 new toys and helped distribute over 6,000 toys to less fortunate families in Lamar County.  The Commander’s Award for Public Service is the fourth highest honor the Toys for Tots Campaign can bestow upon a civilian, ranking directly below the Outstanding Civilian Service Award.

image006Aikin 4th grader Nevaeh Booker won third place in Lamar Soil and Water Conservation District’s poster contest.  The annual contest is conducted by  Lamar SWCD to promote education and interest in conservation of our nat­ural resources.

State-wide contests are sponsored jointly each year by the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board and the Association of Texas Soil and Water Conservation Districts, who choose the topics.

Chisum student performs with All State Symphonic Band

IMG_8450On Saturday, February 16, 2013, Chisum High School sophomore clarinetist Michael Edenhoffer performed with the Association of Texas Small School Bands’ All State Symphonic Band.

Edenhoffer was selected to perform following rigorous auditions at the region, area, and state level.

The All State Symphonic band was conducted by Dr. Peter Boonshaft, professor of music and director of bands at Hofstra University.

Michael is the son of Dr. Peter Edenhoffer and Ildiko Edenhoffer.

After presenting research projects at the Kilgore Regional Science Fair on March 1, two North Lamar students received awards.

Grant Erickson and Olivia Stankus, both freshmen, were awarded certificates and medals from the Army and Navy as well as the National Oceanic and Environmental organizations.

Stankus will go on to compete at the Exxon Mobile State Science and Engineering Fair in San Antonio on March 26 after placing sixth at Kilgore.

The Paris High UIL accounting team has had an outstanding practice run leading up to the district meet on March 22.

Lately, the team placed third among Class 3A schools in a virtual challenge meet which drew entries from all classifications across the state.  Also, senior Justin Hutchison, the defending state champion in the academic event, was the top Class 3A finisher and was second overall in the latest virtual meet.

Other members of the team are (middle, from left) juniors Caitlin Nance and Na­talie Morrison, who finished 10th individually, and (bottom) senior Dylan Ruthart and sophomore Arish Pardiwalla.

ford pnPatsy Carter Ford, 72, of Sumner, died Monday, March 4, 2013 at Brentwood Terrace in Paris. Graveside services are set for 10:00 A.M. Saturday, March 9,2013 at Prairie Ridge Cemetery in Sumner, Texas. Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Patsy was born in Paris, Texas, on January 6, 1941, the only child of James and Dorrell Perkins Carter.  She attended Central School her entire school career.  She retired from North Lamar Independent School District after 26 years as a paraprofessional.  She had  passion for working with students with learning disabilities and special needs.

Patsy was a member of Maxey Baptist Church and served in many capacities.  She was also very active in the Maxey Community Center and the Women’s Home Extension or “The Club” as it was called for years.  She had a love for children, (especially her two granddaughters), cooking, and entertaining guests in her home.

Patsy was preceded in death by her parents and a special Uncle Gene Carter, whom she considered her brother and best friend.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Ford, of Sumner, her daughters Jami Roper and husband Mike of Conroe, Texas, Joi Lin Roberts and husband Shayne of Paris, Texas, and son, Jeffrey Ford of Sumner, her granddaughters, Cali Clare Roper, of Conroe, Texas, and Carter Larkin Brumley of Paris, Texas who were the lights of her life, and her “Special Angel” Mrs. Betty Pratt who took such excellent care of her throughout her illness along with sisters-in-law Laura Jean Ford, Jeanne Ford, brothers and sisters-in-law James and Jean Ford, and Robert and Lois Ford.

Patsy’s family would like to thank the staff at Brentwood Terrace and Waterford Hospice for the loving care that was given to her throughout her illness.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to North Lamar Education Foundation (NLEF) 3201 Lewis Lane, Paris, Texas 75460.

McFaddenMay Bell McFadden, 85, of Paris, passed from this life Monday March 4, 2013 at Paris Regional Medical Center. Starrett Funeral Home will conduct graveside rites at 11:00 a.m. Saturday March 9, 2013 at the Antioch Cemetery, with Edwin Umphress officiating.

The family will greet friends at the cemetery for one hour prior to the service.

May Bell was born May 14, 1927 in Lamar County, a daughter of Jap and Clarcey Roebuck Cockrum. She was a graduate of Delmar schools, then spent a career in hospital and nursing home work. She was of the Baptist faith.

She married Steve McFadden, who preceded her in death. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Carl Edward Ford, on February 7, 2003; by two brothers, J.W. Cockrum and Jake Cockrum; and by a sister-in-law, Maxine Cockrum.

She is survived by two sisters, Kathleen Umphress, of Valliant, OK and Elizabeth Whitaker, of Paris; two brothers, Chester Cockrum, and Kenneth (Chock) Cockrum, both of Paris; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend and caregiver Richender (Jean) Samis, of Paris.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Antioch Cemetery Association.

Dicken001Dollie Davidson Dicken, 89, of Paris, passed from this life on Tuesday March 5, 2013 at Paris Regional Medical Center. Starrett Funeral Home will conduct funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Friday March 8, 2013 at the Southside Baptist Church, with Rev. Gary Reed and Rev. Billy Norris officiating. Interment will follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery. Dollie’s body will lie in repose at the church for one hour prior to the service.

The family will receive friends at Starrett Funeral Home from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday.

Dollie was born July 6, 1923 in the Glory community of Lamar County, a daughter of James Henry and Hattie Adams Davidson. She was a graduate of Glory schools, and of the school of nursing at the Sanitarium of Paris, and was a professional caregiver in Paris hospitals until she began employment with Dr. Charles McMillan, until her retirement. Not one to stay idle, she then entered employment as a greeter at Walmart, and as a caregiver for the elderly until her final retirement at her family’s insistence and her personal dismay. She was a longtime member of the Southside Baptist Church, and a Past Worthy Matron of Order of the Eastern Star.

Dollie married Delbert Euell Dicken on December 6, 1944 in Lamar County. He preceded her in death on July 26, 1999.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Marie Watson, Irene Barnes, Ruby Bills, Willie Mae Roper, and Robbie Reed.

She is survived by a son, James W. Dicken and wife Frances, of Wichita Falls; a granddaughter, Shawntel Golden and husband Adam, of Paris; two grandsons, Michael Dicken and Ronald Dicken; two great-grandchildren, Garrett Golden and Chesney Golden; and a brother-in-law, Casey Roper, of Alabama; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Named to serve as pallbearers are Adam Golden, Garrett Golden, Rick Browning, Roy Beard, Keith Watson and David Watson

In lieu of usual remembrances, memorial contributions may be made to the Southside Baptist Church, 790 Jefferson Road, Paris, TX 75460, or the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, 2222 Welborn Street, Dallas, TX 75219,

The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to her caregivers, Myra Kinard, Helen Rayburn, Ludy Sessums, the fifth floor staff of Paris Regional Medical Center, Dr. Thomas Troutt, and the entire staff of Stillhouse Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

ex-PNHelen Geneva Exum, 91 of Powderly, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday,  March 5, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family.

Funeral services have been set for Friday, March 8, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Powderly Church of Christ with David Ballard officiating.  Interment will follow at Long Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home.

She is survived by her husband of 74 years, Lois W. Exum; children, Lois (Johnny) Exum and wife Sharon, Jimmy Exum and wife Joyce, Tommy Exum and wife Jo, Sonia McKnight and husband Butch, Judy Exum and Ron Brannon,; grandchildren, Bob McKnight and wife Darla, Johnny Lee Exum, Doil Tingen and husband Von, Deidre House and husband Mark, Lance Exum, Brad McKnight, Bo Exum and wife Liz, Marty Exum and wife Tammy, Geanie Freeman and husband Curtis, Ashley Exum, Casidy Figueroa and husband Jeramy, Cyrena Brannon, Lacey Brannon; 26 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Polly Morris; brothers, R.L. Douglas, J.C. Douglas, J.M. Douglas.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Kim Exum; parents, Walter and Ellie Douglas; sister, Louise Douglas, brother, Scott Douglas.

Pallbearers will be Bob McKnight, Johnny Lee Exum, Lance Exum, Brad McKnight, Bo Exum and Marty Exum.  Honorary Pallbearer will be Tem Exum.

Helen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother.  Her door was always open and the coffee pot was always on.  She loved cooking for the whole family.  Granny’s butter roll was the best in Texas.  We love our Granny.

Stone-PNTollie G. Stone, 94 of Paris, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013.

A graveside service has been set for Friday, March 8, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at Providence Cemetery with Marvin Weir officiating.  The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home.

She married Jerry Stone on May 13, 1937.  He was a professional golfer and after his retirement they managed several Country Clubs.  She was a member of Bonham Street Church of Christ.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Diane Coyle, Teresa Nava, Lisa Haskins, Burt Vickers; 5 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; 6 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Stone; daughters, Cadellia Sexton, Jonell Vickers;  parents, Claude Leroy and Willie Barbee; siblings, Ada Lee Holland and husband Jack, Shelly Barbee, Lewis William Barbee, LeRoy Barbee, John Leslie Barbee, Maydell Barbee Alred and husband Ralph, Sherma Kenner Barbee, Ruth Glendion Smith and husband Charlie, Herchell Barbee.

Scan0001aRuth Marie Mueller went to be with the Lord on March 6 2013. She was born in Dallas Texas in 1926 to Leo and Bessie Houck. Mom enjoyed spending time with family and friends and her door was always open. She loved gardening and actively participating in events with her children and grandchildren – from Girl Scouts to Little League. She is preceded in death by her husband Maj. John J. Mueller (Ret) and is survived by her children: daughter Karrell Staton (Joe), daughter Mary Ann Franklin (Rickey), son John Mueller II, daughter Jan Marquez, and daughter Laura Mueller (Robert Mann).

She also leaves behind many beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren: grandsons Russell Gamble (Rachael) and John David Pate II, granddaughters Tera Pate, Alenia Huellemann (Ralph), Karrell Chambless (Steven), Alicia Pruitt (Richard), and Scarlett Mueller, great grandchildren, James, Maleena, Joseph, Jacob, Anna, Kaitlyn, Kameron, and Simon.

She is also survived by three sisters, Vivian Huff, Joanne West and Lorabelle Zercher, and many nieces and nephews.

Services are under the direction of Bright-Holland Funeral Home. Burial will be made in Barancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, FL.

Beauron W. Fields, 85 of Paris, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at Stillhouse Rehabilitation and Healthcare.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home.  Burial of ashes will take place at a later date.

He was a member of Cannanland Church of God.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Geneva Fields; sons, Charles Warren Fields and companion Judy Anderson, Rickey Don Fields and wife Mary Ann; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles Warren Fields, Rayford Fields.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Connie Kerr Fields; several brothers and sisters.

The family wants to give a special thanks to Dr’s Trammell, McLemore and Tijerina; also, a special thanks to Stillhouse Rehab and Healthcare and Hospice Plus for all of their care and kindness.

TxDOT appoints Paul Montgomery as Paris District Engineer

The Texas Department of Transportation is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Paul Montgomery, P.E., as the new Paris District Engineer effective March 11, 2013.

Montgomery20In his new role, Paul will oversee the planning, designing, building, operation and maintenance of the state transportation system in the nine-county Paris District.  He has served as the Director of Maintenance in the Lufkin District since 2003.

A 25-year agency veteran, Paul started his TxDOT career in 1988 at the Tyler Residency, serving eight months before transferring to the Mineola Residency where he served as an engineering assistant involved in the design, construction and maintenance of highways over the next two years.  He then spent two years in the district design section in Tyler before being elevated to Assistant Area Engineer in the Jacksonville Area Office.

While in Jacksonville, Paul oversaw the design, construction and maintenance of highways and bridges including a unique project involving the replacement of nine bridges of the Texas State Railroad for Texas Parks and Wildlife.  In 1995, Paul became the Assistant Director of Maintenance in the Tyler District, and then was named the Waco District’s Director of Maintenance in 1998.  In that role, Paul was responsible for all district maintenance operations and was one of the lead individuals in the development and implementation of TxDOT’s first Total Maintenance Contract.  He was selected to be the Lufkin District’s Director of Maintenance in 2003.

Paul earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University in 1987 and became a licensed professional engineer in 1992.  He and his wife, Hadley, have two daughters, Olivia and Sydney, and one son, Walker.

North Lamar student places in braille challenge

image005The 13th annual Braille Challenge® is the only national reading and writing contest in Braille for blind and visually impaired students.

Braille Challenge® categories include reading comprehension, Braille speed and accuracy, proofreading, spelling and reading tactile charts and graphs.

The preliminary round is open to students of all skills levels. Agencies and schools throughout the U.S. and Canada have partnered with Braille Institute to host 42 Regional Braille Challenge contests from mid-January through mid-March. The top-scoring 60 contestants come to Los Angeles in June for a Final Round—two days of competition, camaraderie and fun.

Darbie Thompson, 4th grader at North Lamar’s Bailey Intermediate School, competed on February 9, 2013 in Austin, Texas at her grade level which included both 4th and 5th graders.   Darbie placed 3rd in the state at this level.  She won’t know if she has qualified for Nationals in California until after all 42 Regions have held their Braille Challenges and can organize and rank all the scores.
