American-Red-Cross-LogoThe American Red Cross as recently launched its brand new, life-saving Tornado App! Some key features of this free app will include a ‘siren’ sound whenever there is an NOAA (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration) tornado warning in your area, instant access to our ‘Safe & Well’ notification site, a wealth of interactive preparedness planning tools, as well as a very relieving ‘All-Clear’ message when the storm has passed.

“This app is especially important here across the tornado-prone Northeast Texas and Southwest Arkansas areas,” states American Red Cross, CFRE, Executive Director John Davis.

Being that the weather systems seem to get more volatile each year, and ‘tornado season’ just around the corner, it would be in all or our interests to get prepared in case disaster strikes.

The Red River Valley Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is lining up programs this year to educate citizens, employees, managers and business owners on the common subject of workplace violence & bullying, and in less than two weeks, highly respected, veteran police officer, and our current Paris Chief, Bob Hundley, will be giving a presentation covering just these topics at a SHRM catered luncheon.

The event will be held at the Lewis Hall Training Room — directly behind Paris Regional Medical Center’s North Campus — on Thursday, March 21.

“With all the attention in the media these days on workplace violence and bullying, as well as many tragic incidents, this topic is on everyone’s mind,” Isaac Sanchez, PJ Trailers, Mfg. Co. and RRV SHRM member, told the Extra! about the upcoming luncheon seminar.

Chief Hundley speaking at the GOP meeting in February, 2013.

Chief Hundley speaking at the GOP meeting in February, 2013.

Chief Bob Hundley will be presenting the program to our area Human Resource Managers, although the public is welcome to attend.

The presentation will begin at 12pm and end at 1pm, but people are encouraged to arrive early, around 11:30, to get your meal and seat.

Keeping the good work of the Paris Police Department in the public eye, Hundley has made several presentations, including one recently answering the Sandy Hook School tragedy, speaking to the Paris ISD Board of Trustess, saying that the ‘Paris Police are ready to respond if schools need them.

Chief Hundley told the Extra! that some of the topics involving workplace violence and bullying that will be discussed on March 21 at the Human Resource luncheon will include:

  • Recognizing employees with problems, bullying or anti-social behavior
  • Recent history of workplace violence, along with demographics of the subjects involved
  • Communication skills
  • Conflict resolution
  • Behavioral Warning Signs
  • Pre-Attach Signs
  • Body Language
  • Safety Plans & Prevention
  • Personal & Workplace safety
  • What to expect when 9-1-1 is called
  • Law Enforcement Response

There will be a very nice catered lunch for those that attend, and it is very unlikely that you will get information such as this this anywhere else.

Chief Hundley’s experience and presentation will leave you wondering what you can do to change this issue that has become such a frequency in today’s society.

If you are a student, employee, manager, business owner, or just someone who would like to come and learn about something that is hurting people every minute of every day — everyone is invited.

Tickets are $12, but this includes a special recipe catered lunch and a beverage.  If you would like to attend this special luncheon, please RSVP at rfiggins@1st-fed.com.

“I look forward to this great presentation and would like to thank Chief Hundley for taking time out of his busy schedule to share this wonderful presentation with us,” Sanchez said in conclusion.

Like several other other of the non-profits in our community — such as the Lamar County Coalition of Business, Education & Industry and the idea and success of their Mad Max Run — the United Way of Lamar County put their brains together to design an event that would not only be different than the ‘norm’, but also fun and memorable, as the idea is to make this an annual fundraiser for our branch of United Way — one of the best in the entire state of Texa, exceeding their 2013 fundraising campaign gaol by over $100,000.

The United Way’s 1st annual Urban Adventure Race will involve much more mental and fun, puzzle-like challenges rather than just a ‘foot race’ or just strength challenges, although there will be obstacles that are designed to be physically challenging.

These destinations, challenges and obstacles will be spread amongst the entire town, so that each team will reach a them a number or different ways, including by vehicle.

The idea is who can get through these challenges completed the quickest and correctly — regardless whether physical, mental or down right interesting.

There can be teams that consist of 2-4 people, and you must be 18-years or older to participate in the race.  A waiver of release will be signed by any and all participants that prepare to be involved in the event.

The Team Registration deadline is March 29th, so it is coming soon.  If you want to get yourself and team, or know someone who may want to be a part of this first ever, unique event, please click HERE for the team registration form.

There area also sponsorships available for business that will offer great exposure for your company, as well as support a great cause, however the spaces are limited to so move quickly if you are interested.

What Your Cholesterol Numbers Mean

$
0
0

*by Sucharu Chris Prakash, MD*

How often should cholesterol levels be checked?

The National Cholesterol Education Program recommends that all adults have their fasting lipid profile checked at 20 years of age and every five years thereafter.

Dr. Chris Prakash

Dr. Chris Prakash

What should your cholesterol level be?

High cholesterol is associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, which can include coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.

A complete cholesterol profile is made up of three different things:

  • HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) is the good cholesterol (you want this to be high).
  • LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) is the bad cholesterol (low is better).
  • Triglycerides are the most common form of fat found in food and in the body (the visible fat on chicken and steak). If you are overweight, your body stores the extra calories you eat as triglycerides.

Figuring out the best cholesterol levels to aim for can be confusing. I use the American Heart Association guidelines to help interpret the numbers:

Total Cholesterol Level Category
Less than 200 mg/dL Desirable level that puts you at lower risk for coronary heart disease.
200 to 239 mg/dL Borderline high
240 mg/dL and above High blood cholesterol – A person with this level has more than twice the risk of coronary heart disease as someone whose cholesterol is below 200 mg/dL.
HDL Cholesterol Level Category
Less than 40 mg/dL
(for men)
Less than 50 mg/dL
(for women)
Low HDL cholesterol. A major risk factor for heart disease.
60 mg/dL and above High HDL cholesterol – An HDL of 60 mg/dL and above is considered protective against heart disease.
LDL Cholesterol Level Category
Less than 100 mg/dL Optimal (especially if high risk of heart disease)
100 to 129 mg/dL Near or above optimal
130 to 159 mg/dL Borderline high
160 to 189 mg/dL High
190 mg/dL and above Very high – Your other risk factors for heart disease and stroke help determine what your LDL level should be.
Triglyceride Level Category
Less than 100 mg/dL Optimal
Less than 150 mg/dL Normal
150–199 mg/dL Borderline high
200–499 mg/dL High - A triglyceride level of 150 mg/dL or higher is one of the risk factors of metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome increases the risk for heart disease and other disorders, including diabetes.
500 mg/dL and above Very high

Every individual has his or her unique set of risk factors for cardiovascular disease. It is important that a discussion be held with your doctor about your risk factors (and cholesterol profile is an important part of that). Only then can you arrive at a strategy to lower your risk, which may include a combination of lifestyle modification and drugs.
